Travel Bucket List - Japan (Day 6 : Akihabara & my first Omakase)

Any die-hard fan of anime or manga would have loved spending most of their time in Akihabara. This place has indeed gained global recognition as a haven for gaming and electronic gadgets.

Not to mention, taiyaki stores are everywhere.

I even found this store selling magikarp taiyaki (fish-shaped cakes filled with red bean paste).

In our random hunt for good food, we stumbled upon this shop, Kanda Matsuya, one of the famous soba restaurants in Tokyo, known to have existed >130 years ago.
What's on the menu (sorry for the glare in the photo!)
Other customers in the shop recommended some other side dishes for us to try as well.
The wooden exterior of the shop extends to its inside, giving it a warm traditional atmosphere, amidst a packed crowd. We were lucky our wait was a short one.
Behold, this ebi tempura here was one of the best i've ever tasted! Along with the refined texture of home-made soba, it was my finest soba experience yet!
I needn't describe how juicy and flavourful their Grilled Chicken was either.

This herring dish is another one of their popular dishes.

It was time to explore the streets of Akihabara after a sumptuous meal.

People everywhere...

Figurines everywhere!

Highlight of our day was dinner where we were back to Tsukiji Market to savour my very first omakase experience.

This was a place recommended and reservations made by a local Jap who assured us of the finest ingredients, without burning a hole in our pockets. LOL.
This place was so tiny it could accommodate no more than 10 customers comfortably.
And yet, there was still a cosy ambience about this place, it was like having our personal chef prepare one of the best meals of my life!
And so begins our 2-hour omakase journey...
Chef's selection of the freshest and finest started with this :-
The names of the fishes may not ring a bell to me, but what the heck, they were all just freaking good!

I remember this was a sweet shrimp dish, so fresh it felt like they were just swimming in the ocean an hour ago.

I fell in love with uni (sea urchin) few days ago and i found it again here! And what a holy big chunk i got.
Even the tamago and ginger that was supposedly a palate cleanser tasted heavenly.
More fish !
We even got a brief live documentary of what we ate.
The rice portion of all our sushi pieces were smaller than what i usually had back in Msia but i'm guessing that's so we could focus on the fish rather than let carbs fill our stomach.
Super huge and sweet scallop.
I was oh-so-glad our chef let us have another piece of uni.....

Another one of my fave pieces was the tuna belly. so deliciously fatty and melts-in-the-mouth.
Even their plain miso soup was something I just had to shout about.

I was extremely stuffed with seafood (and rice!) by the end of our course dinner and this ikura (salmon roe) handroll was somewhat like 'dessert' that was the perfect finale to a memorable performance by our chef.
Thanks for our chef for his lovely gesture in preparing a mini plate of sushi for the kids too.

Ain't this cute? Darren also got his first ever taste of sashimi...only in Japan. LOL.
I would love to return to this place for another unforgettable dining experience. The expressions here say it all.
