To cut me some slack, let's just say that since I had yet to perfect my recipe, I couldn't possibly risk those poor folks choking on my hardy stone-like cupcakes.
Hey not too bad wat..I ended up buying more cakes and biskets than I could ever bake them. There was also one truckful of sundries for them. Thanks to Uncle Richard for letting us use his Frontier. The charity crib we chose was 'Bachang Handicap and Mentally Disabled Children Love Center' (Tel: 06-337 6449). Though named so, there were also the sickly/ stroke patients, Down Syndrome patients and old folks amongst the 28 residents here.
The supplies may seem a lot, but I was told these could only last them for a couple of months. They could certainly do with more regular donations throughout the year rather than just during festivities. The noble founders of this center are the Indian couple standing on the far left and right.
This is where the residents sleep at night.
This is where food and snacks are prepared 6 times a day. Work here starts at 6am and finishes at 10pm.According to the founder, they initially faced many difficulties in hiring the locals to do the kinds of task involving washing the residents, feeding them, caring for them, withstanding their antics with much patience and tolerance, cleaning after their excretion, etc. pitiful...
Luckily 2 Indon maids were recently employed and from what I heard, they cared for the residents wholeheartedly.
The doors leading out to the balconies and this staircase is grilled and locked at night for the safety of the residents, not so much to prevent break-ins but rather to keep them from running out or endangering themselves. Hopefully, this would not be a hindrance in case of emergencies/ fires. And that fire extinguisher better be in working condition.
There's just so much we can learn from them.
All it takes is a little pondering for a lot of realising.
